The film style of which he is an exponent, the Nouvelle Violence, because of the very explicit scenes of violence. The themes of his films is situated in the underworld where other laws prevail than in bourgeois society. Characteristic for dealing with violence is the banality of it, as if killing and torturing ordinary cost is.
Typical of the work of Tarantino are also the numerous references to other films. This is often blamed on the fact that at the age of fifteen have left school to work in a video store and so came into contact with various film genres. In an interview with the BBC says Tarantino still be overjoyed with this decision.
An example is the dance in Pulp Fiction that John Travolta, one of the main characters, makes with Uma Thurman, referring to Travolta’s dance films, including Saturday Night Fever.

Black Swan was nominated for five Academy Awards, the cinematography, directing and editing were much appreciated by critics. Additionally, the film was nominated for best film of the year and Natalie Portman won for best female lead. Has all this been positive fair criticism?

The film
The film revolves around a dance production of Swan Lake. The producer for the special performance to find a dancer that both the role of the white swan could undertake the role of the black swan. Nina, played by Natalie Portman, would really like to have this role. She does not however have the wildness that needed to be able to play Black swan. Another dancer, Lily (Mila Kunis) is well suited for this role. Afraid of the roller to get Nina begins to suffer from hallucinations, and she sinks further and further into her own competitive spirit.

Claustrophobic cinematography
Black Swan has many similarities with Aranofsky’s earlier film Requiem for a Dream. Both films use the camera as a tool for the viewer to feel uncomfortable. Where fast installation and use of fisheye lenses in Requiem for a Dream provided a disturbing picture of drug use, Black Swan is characterized by using hand-held camera and lots of close-ups. This, together in a claustrophobic feeling that the audience is included in the total experience of Nina. The nomination for best cinematography has earned.

Perspective
The character of Nina is very strongly played by Natalie Portman. The many close-ups ensure that the emotions of the protagonist is clearly conveyed to the viewer. The fact that the whole story from the perspective of Nina told makes sure that the film is very unpredictable, because of their hallucinations. This way of telling the story is very well developed and makes sure you have the viewer throughout the movie keeps asking what will happen next.

Use of color and music
The color palette of the film is kept very simple. The film consists mostly of white and black. The classical meanings for these colors (white stands for good and for evil black), this film used to tell the story visually, while the themes to be developed. In addition, there is an additional symbolic dimension, by the fact that Swan Lake is central to the story. It is striking that the turning point in the story very bright, flashy colors, knows something that makes colors more clearly a very important role in this film. In addition, the music is striking. The soundtrack consists almost entirely of classical music that adds to the atmosphere. Certainly at times exciting music more likely, the use of classical music for an uncomfortable feeling. Because it feels like the music belongs to those sequences, the tension increased.

The horror side of Black Swan
Yet Black Swan also has drawbacks. Something what I found was slightly disturbing horror how simple techniques were used. I refer especially to the sudden appearance of such a face or object accompanied by a loud noise. Moments like this still manages to give you the fright to hunt, but I had somewhat expected more from a director who through camera work alone can produce frightening images. Aronofsky is able to do so he leaves a number of sequences clearly. Nina runs throughout the film because only minor wounds, of which the cause is clear only later. Although often small wounds are there through a combination of editing and camera work for heavily made this seem very painful moments. In many films we see characters walking around with a lot of injuries, without having to experience these seem to have. In Black Swan appears to have even a small scratch can hurt a lot, a fine example of cinema.

Excellent thriller
By the aforementioned claustrophobic cinematography Black Swan, Aronofsky’s earlier films like Requiem for a Dream, not a film that can easily look away. It is not the plot that this causes, but the way the images are placed. You are constantly aware that at any moment something unexpected can happen. The music, the editing and the colors are elements in an original way used Black Swan This makes it an interesting movie to watch, or sometimes reluctantly. The positive reviews the film had been so largely justified. Requiem for a Dream which showed the drug could have devastating consequences, Black Swan shows how one person striving for perfection can break down completely. An exciting thriller with a clear message.
